Hi.
so I have a habit of turning my feet out when I walk. I've been doing this since I was a kid. I'm wondering if there's any way I can stop myself from doing that, or If I need to have an orthopedic doctor help me with that. please comment.

Hi Lesslie.
I had the same problem diagnosed by a mobility teacher when I was eighteen.
His, and my, solution was just to pay attention to it and try to change it.
I thing I've done it.
I guess the bottom line is don't panic, just try to change it.

I tend to do that too, and sometimes I walk almost on my toes, and I skip when I run. I don't think it's actually a medical thing for me though, or at least I've never worried about getting it checked. But it doesn't bother me though.
Anyway, if it is a habbit you want to get rid of, you'd probably just have to really pay attention to how you're walking, I mean so you could practice walking with your feet straight. It'll probably take lots of time and practice to get used to that though, because I know when I've tried it, it feels weird to me, and I really have to pay attention to it because I'm so used to walking with my feet slanted. But yeah, I think it'd probably just be a matter of practicing to walk with your feet pointed forward.
It's the way you've been walking since you learned. I do that myself. my brother took notice of this one day, and my dad said I'd probably need surgery to correct this habit. You'd probably break tiny bones in your feet if you tried walking straight.
I do it as well. Since I was a child, a mobility officer noticed it with me to. I went to see a doctor about it and they said it is flat feet with me.
Flat feet? Hmmmm. I really don't think it's anything to worry about.
I had this problem, too. It got pointed out to me when I was about 17 or so. Like Bobby, I changed it by being very very conscious of it for awhile. It took some time, and I had to pay attention to it, but now I've been told I don't do it anymore, and I no longer have to think about it. Nymphadora, I don't understand what you mean about breaking bones in your feet by walking correctly again. How would you do that?
Sometimes we form habbits that have just become a part of life, and we may even be unaware of them until others point them out to us.
I discovered this while taking a speech class in college. My roommate pointed out to me that I said uh a lot when talking. Primarily, it was just to buy some time while I thought up a response.
However, once he pointed it out to me, I quit saying uh so much and just took a little longer to respond.

lol bob. Well, I noticed, quite by accident that I turn my feet out to the side when I'm walking as well. It isn't really a problem when I'm walking on my own using my cane, but when I'm with a sighted guide, I'll always tread on their toes, but I find I can't walk properly or keep up with them when I turn my feet in and try and walk straight. In fact, mum's always asked why I was walking funny when I tried turning my feet in so I didn't tread on her toes.
We only discovered I had totally flat feet when I was about 11 years old and we had these wedges, insoles and arch supports built in to some of my shoes to see if that would correct the problem, but even they didn't work. I had physio/electric shock treatment on them, lol and that didn't work either, so I know surgery's probably the answer for me, but try telling my dear mother that. also, my totally flat feet makes it totally impossible to wear high heeled shoes or boots for even a morning in College as they really take their toll on my feet so they feel like some invisible person's bending or stretching my feet beyond their normal length and pulling all the muscles in them, so if I can have surgery on them, I certainly will.

I walk on my toes, and I've done that so much that the calf muscles in my legs are so tight. My legs hurt if I walk alot. The doctors said that surgery was the best option to stretch the muscles back normally. I've had exstensive physical therapy, and it didn't help much. I've walked on my toes since I started walking. It's a hard habbit to stop!
yes i tend to tread on my friends heals alot. i am not sure if this is because maybe my feet r slanted or what.
I do step on someones heels alot too. I really don't know why. I am flat footed.
my problem is not turning the foot out, but turning it inward. I tried a brace a few times, but it only made my leg hurt, so I stopped. but yeah, mom seems to think I am trying to protect my toes or something, but I don't know. and it's only my left foot that does this, so I don't know.
